Grime's Graves Neolithic Flint Mine
2022 - 2024

Since 2022, Robin Sullivan has led Grime’s Graves: Digging Deeper—a bold and transformative community engagement initiative for English Heritage Trust, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Through creative programming, inclusive outreach, and deep-rooted partnerships, the project has reimagined how people connect with this unique Neolithic site.

Grime's Graves: Digging Deeper

Since 2022, artist and heritage practitioner Robin Sullivan has been leading Grime’s Graves: Digging Deeper—an ambitious and transformative community engagement programme funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Rooted in care, creativity, and connection, the project reimagined how people interact with one of Britain’s most extraordinary Neolithic sites.

Over the course of three years, the project delivered 11 distinct initiatives designed to engage communities who might not otherwise access heritage spaces. From youth sound and film projects with neurodiverse teenagers, to new children’s literature by Bloomsbury author Sophie Kirtley, Stone Age school days, and community pop-ups, Robin worked to ensure the site became a place where everyone could feel welcome.

Forging partnerships with 23 organisations—from Men’s Craft and Norfolk Wildlife Trust to local schools and museums—the project reached nearly 2,000 people both on and off site. Highlights included the return of the Flint Festival, which broke visitor and fundraising records, allowing the team to fund over 40 community minibus visits to the site.

Whether it was young people rolling down the undulating hills for the first time, volunteers restoring habitats for ground-nesting birds, or someone simply being offered a cup of tea and a listening ear, Grime’s Graves: Digging Deeper has shown that heritage, when held with care, can be a true gift—one that creates lasting impact far beyond the site itself.
